Deftones album #5 : Saturday Night Wrist – the title refers to the nerve damage caused when someone falls asleep on their hand after a night of heavy intoxication. It’s an apt title considering the album was recorded when tension between band members was at its peak, and the lead singer was just about recovering from his own drug addiction. As a result, the band released one of their most dark, spacey, layered and experimental albums to date. It is also the most polarizing amongst fans and band members alike. You either hate it or love it, and I definitely fall in the latter category.
It was also the only time the band recorded an instrumental track and they absolutely nailed it. ‘U,U,D,D,L,R,L,R,A,B, Select,Start’, which refers to the secret Konami cheat code (although I believe it’s supposed to be B,A at the end), is an incredible piece of music and is completely different from anything else they’ve ever released. In fact that’s the guitarist Stephen Carpenter on the drums, which is also a first. I would highly recommend listening to it with headphones on, although you’re going to find it very difficult to keep yourself from getting lost in your thoughts with it playing in the background. 30 bonus lives guaranteed.
